Job Description

Mission: To be part of the Engineering team to assist with the design and engineering of renewable energy power plants for the interconnection of renewable power plants at the earliest possible stage of project development, especially before the investment decision.

Additionally, they will participate actively in the construction process during the project execution phase providing support to the construction team.

Responsibilities

  • Support and/or lead electrical engineering and design activities during the development and construction phases working towards delivering technically compliant MV and HV interconnection projects for renewable energy projects located in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Develop and establish the technical base case and specifications of the project related to its interconnection works.
  • Review and evaluate technical documentation and contracts (PPA, Grid Code, Connection Agreement, etc.) to establish technical requirements to be implemented in the interconnection solutions.
  • Conduct detailed due diligence and investigations to conclude on technology selections where relevant for interconnection works.
  • Support with drafting of technical schedules for various contracts (EPC, PPA, O&M, etc.) related to the interconnection works.
  • Participation in the design of reticulation and interconnection works to support in the calculation of the capex of the project.
  • Support with compilation and evaluation of RFP documents and supplier responses during the tendering phase of the projects.
  • Manage, coordinate, and review the complete detailed engineering design package / process for the interconnection works.
  • Support the construction team during the project execution to include the planning and alignment of electrical scope of the project.
  • Coordination with the Business Development, Power Marketing, Engineering, Planning and Resource departments.
  • Ensuring compliance with ACCIONA Energia Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance with ACCIONA Energia policies and procedures.

Additional

  • Comprehensive understanding of the South African Grid Codes, regulations and standards that relate to renewable energy projects and connecting/operating these generators within the network.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the equivalent codes, regulations, and standards in the sub-Saharan region.
  • Knowledge of the full spectrum substation designs.
  • Comprehensive electrical engineering knowledge in MV and HV (11kV up to 400kV).
  • Knowledge and experience of power systems, grid studies, and grid connection of utility-scale renewable energy projects in South Africa.
  • Good understanding the various interfaces during project execution phase.
  • Experience dealing with consultants’, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to travel within South Africa and the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa and abroad from time to time
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Degrees-Certificates/Training: University degree: BSc Engineering (Electrical).
    Further training:
  • Professional Engineering (PrEng) registration with ECSA.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD and the entire MS Office Suite.
  • Training in one or more systems modelling software such as DigSilent Powerfactory, ETAP, CYMCAP or equivalent, PLS-CADD.

Years/Areas of experience:

  • 7+ years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer,
  • 3+ years’ experience in a project environment working on HV substations, transmission, distribution, and MV reticulation design experience.
  • Experience of power systems, grid studies, and grid connection of utility-scale renewable energy projects in South Africa.
